Jin Shin Jyutsu
The ancient art of harmonizing emotions, mind, and body

You might have never heard about Jin Shin Jyutsu but . . .according to written records that remain in the archives of the Imperial Palace in Japan, Jin Shin Jyutsu was widely known and practiced in ancient times. Jin Shin Jyutsu is sometimes referred to as "The Grandmother of Acupuncture". Both derive from the eastern medical tradition, and have a contextual similarity in understanding and approach.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is nothing less than precise knowledge about how energy becomes matter – how it starts to form our physical body, branches out, and becomes blood, bones, tissue, organs, everything. There are 26 so-called energy locks on each side of the body, 12 organ flows, and many other pathways throughout the body.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a hands-on, non-invasive therapy that balances the underlying energy or life force that vitalizes the physical body and our entire being. Our bodies contain a complex system of energy pathways that feed life into all of our cells. When one or more of these paths become blocked, this damming effect may lead to illness and pain on the physical, emotional, or spiritual level. These blockages or stagnations not only disrupt the local area but also persist, eventually disharmonizing the complete path of the energy flow.

Treatment involves the application of the hands for balancing specific flows of life energy in the body. It affects the body in a manner similar to acupuncture, only without needles. It activates our self-healing capacity. Like many ancient healing systems, it is founded on the principle that to heal the body, the person must strengthen and harmonize the flow of life energy within.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is very helpful for any imbalance in body, mind, or soul: a lack of energy after a long illness, stomach pain, diabetes, constipation, insomnia, headaches, feeling stuck in life, not feeling quite yourself, dizziness, hormonal imbalances, and many others. It is helpful in all cases of acute or long-term illness and chronic pain. It is a very effective tool for alleviating an emotional burden such as depression, sadness, or grief.

It brings more mental and emotional clarity, reconnects us to our true self, and harmonizes all relationships within and without. As an added bonus, you will take home a few easy to do self-help applications in order to continue the healing process.

The results can be truly amazing.

Self-help and emergency methods: applying our innate wisdom

Jin Shin Jyutsu is not just a healing modality but an opening to the wisdom we each of us have inside. We use it naturally and unknowingly to help ourselves regenerate, revitalize and heal. This is what makes it so dynamic. One of basis of Jin Shin Jyutsu is the myriad of self-help possibilities by simply holding our fingers or a combination of two energy locks. You can help yourself even if you know very little about Jin Shin Jyutsu – you can not possibly harm yourself. It has no contraindications at all.

The finger method is very simple yet profound. We all use it intuitively. Even babies do it when they suck their thumbs because it soothes them, regenerates their energy and eases tummy aches. Each finger relates to a specific emotional state and many different body functions. The most significant are:

Thumb – worry, stomach, spleen, nervousness, digestion, daily fatigue, headaches
Index – fear, kidney, bladder, circulation of all body fluids,
muscles and bones, elimination of toxins

Middle – anger, liver, gallbladder, blood and lymph fluid, eyes, digestion
Ring – sadness, lung, large intestine, breathing, digestion and elimination, skin conditions
Little – trying too hard, striving, heart, small intestine, all heart functions, blood circulation, healthy bones and nervous system
Picture
You can exercise this method by simply wrapping the fingers of one hand around ONE finger at a time of the other hand. Hold it without much pressure for 2 - 3 minutes. Then move on to the next finger. If time permits, do both hands. This is a wonderful way to fall asleep at night, to start your day in the morning or to practice while watching a movie.  For best results, make it into a daily practice.

This emergency application, also known as finger-toe flow, is very simple yet very powerful. Don't be deceived by its simplicity! You can apply it in all kind of emergency situations and quickly turn things around toward the better: a serious illness, before and after surgery, cases of deep depression, after an accident, high fever, food poisoning, somebody in shock and so on. It can be applied 2-3 times a day in acute situations and 2-3 times per week for already existing conditions.

It cannot be self-applied, somebody else needs to apply it for you if you are the one in need or you can apply it to another person. You can sit together comfortably on chairs, on a sofa or on the ground. If the person is very sick, he/she probably wants to lay down and you can sit next to the bed.

Hold with one hand the thumb of the other person and with your other hand the little toe of the opposite foot. You don't need to apply much pressure, just hold the finger by wrapping your hand around it, and the toe by lightly pinching it with 2 fingers. You are the "jumper cables" so to speak :-)
Hold for 3-5 minutes. Then move on to the next combination:

Index finger - 4th toe of the opposite foot.
Hold each combo for 3-5 minutes. The remaining combinations are:
Middle finger - 3rd toe opposite foot
Ring finger - 2nd toe opposite foot
Little finger - big toe opposite foot.

Now switch to the other hand and opposite foot and apply the same combinations.

26  energy locks
P
rinciples of the unfolding of human life

I would like to share with you a little bit about my fascination with Jin Shin Jyutsu. About 2 years ago, this healing art presented itself to me through a long in-depth article about its Japanese origins and application in ancient times, its mysterious rediscovery about 100 years ago by Master Jiro Murai, and its arrival in the West through Mary Burmeister.

Being a life-long student of the mysteries of Spirit, mind, and body, and applying that knowledge in various forms in my work as a bodywork therapist for more than a decade, I immediately resonated with what was presented in that article. Through my practice of Structural Integration, I was already familiar with how our body posture is intricately connected to our outlook on life, how our habits and long-term mindsets literally shape and change our physical form, and how our physical body in turn influences our emotions and state of mind.

Jin Shin Jyutsu can be literally translated as HUMAN BEING, or feeling, consciousness, and awareness; PRIMORDIAL ALIVENESS, the One Life that is inherent in everything; and ART, given that each of us is a work of art manifested by the Creator and also that we are creating ourselves continually moment after moment, day after day.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu, there are 26 so-called “energy locks,” each located in a specific area of our body.

These locks are a physical reality, but they are also principles or metaphors of the energetic unfolding of human life. In fact, they are the underlying energetic structure of all lifecycles. These energy locks are thus life principles materialized in our physical body, each of them in its meaningful location and represented by a meaningful number! In the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, by simply holding these locks, we can harmonize, balance, initiate the next step, help end a cycle, sooth, energize, reconnect, open and close, calm, cleanse, and release – physically, mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually.
The energy locks comprise the magic thread that weaves the many elements of our existence into one coherent narrative that is meaningful and never random.
Energy lock No. 1
This lock is located on the inside of the knees.

The prime mover, it carries in itself the memory of ONEness and dares to take the first step into life. It brings the energy all the way down to Earth in order to manifest in the material realm. The energy gathers enough momentum – just like a vortex – to pour itself into something and become something new.

This lock helps us to find our place in the world, make a decision, and go for it. Every new step in a process is also initiated by No. 1! It helps not only with everything stuck above the waist, including breathing problems, choking on something, headaches, and tooth pain, but also with being stuck in a situation or needing/wanting to move forward in life. It helps with making decisions, and when we are holding on to certain ideas or emotions, it can help things to flow again!
Energy lock No. 2
This lock is located on the lower back, just at the upper edge of the hip bones.

It relates to wisdom, seeing through the Creator’s eyes, and space and spaciousness. The more we say Yes! to a new step (lock No. 1), the more openness and spaciousness we experience. It is openness versus the constriction and narrowness of fearful procrastination and anxiety. Also, for our body to be properly aligned and in balance, all of its physical elements need sufficient space. This is also one of the main principles of Structural Integration (Rolfing). This energy lock helps with exactly that: body alignment in general and leg discomfort in particular.

This energy lock helps with everything stuck below the waist, including heavy and painful feet and legs, varicose veins, pelvic problems, difficulties with digestion and elimination, and compressed/slipped spinal discs.

No. 2 is the symbol of discrimination, duality, and the polarity of all life on Earth. Every quality in this world is what it is merely because of contrast. Nothing exists in itself. We can use these opposites as a mirror to reflect back to us what we fail to see in ourselves and thus become whole again. The German word for “desperation” is “verzweiflung,” zwei meaning 2. So applying our hands to No. 2 also helps with anxiety, desperation, and exhaustion. It helps us to find our breath again whenever we lose it.
Energy lock No. 3
This lock is located on the upper back on the edge of the shoulder blades.

It represents the door that lets new things through. Our aliveness wants us to allow new impulses to enter our space so that they can come and go like high and low tides without us resisting or fighting against them. No. 3 relates to giving and taking, to breathing in and breathing out, or to changing from left to right like a swinging door.

Energy lock No. 3 harmonizes the left and right side of our body and is the main lock for supporting respiration as well as the lymphatic and immune systems. It helps with anything related to breathing difficulties and lungs. It helps us to feel inspired, gives new impulses to deadlocked states of being, and enables us to let go of outdated attitudes. It gives us a sense of balance and harmony – 3 being the most stable number – and a more relaxed way of being.

This lock is also a big help for any problems related to our arms, elbows, wrists, and hands, which represent giving and taking and all of our restrictions with that, including numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel, and tennis elbow. One of the main areas of chronic tension in our body is definitely the upper back and the surrounding area. No. 3 often seems to be the epicenter. By harmonizing this energy lock and allowing a fresh breeze to touch and affect us, we are helping all of the above mentioned aspects of our life, and even our endlessly tight upper back may eventually soften a little bit.

Energy lock No. 4
Lock No. 4 is located on the back of the head, right under the base of the skull.

It is the place of transition between the manifested and unmanifested, between energy and matter. It is the window that allows wisdom and the breath of life to enter us. It weaves our physical body so that our soul has a place to stay. Directly behind these energy locks lies the physical breathing center of our body. It is the place on newborn babies that we intuitively hold because it helps them to start breathing regularly and to truly arrive here in this world. It also helps us to manifest our dreams as reality.

This lock can be held for anything problematic in our head, including headaches, dizziness, neck problems, and troubles related to the eyes, ears, and nose. It harmonizes the left and right halves of the brain and helps with common sense decisions. It opens our lungs so that we have more air available. It gives us a clearer vision of our life and the underlying energetic impulses. Harmonizing the complete flow of lock No. 4 can be very useful for reanimating people who are unconscious or in a coma and for recovering from anesthesia after surgery.
Energy lock No. 5
This lock is located on the inner side of the heels.

It relates to perceiving the world with non-judging and non-labeling awareness. It signifies stepping into the world without fear and being aware of new things by using all of our senses. It is about perceiving the world through our physical body.

This lock helps us to let go of fear, old habits, and existential angst. It encourages us to fully inhabit our personal space and to explore the world with childlike curiosity and innocence. No. 5 is the symbol of humankind and also of healing in general. The 4 elements of nature connect with the 5th: the essence, the soul. To heal means to re-establish harmony between the forces of nature and those of human beings.

We want to grow and go beyond our 5 senses. To do that, we must be willing to let go of what we are familiar with and to take on the challenge of facing the unknown. No. 5 is held along with No. 15, which is located in the groin area. The heel of a flat hand is placed on the hip bone, fingers pointing toward the pubic bone. The right hand holds the right No. 5, and the left hand holds the left No. 15.
Energy lock No. 6
Lock No. 6 is located at the highest point of the arch of the feet.

This point is related to balance, and its location couldn’t be more appropriate. Balance in the body begins with the feet, which do the constant work of adjusting to the continuous movements of the body. As the chiropractor among the energy locks, it helps to balance the hips, shoulders, and spine.

In sacred geometry, the number 6 and hexagons (aka beehives) contain the message that there is efficient structure, function, and order. Metaphors and the abstraction of language express the same relation: when we understand a situation or a problem, a solution can be found. In that sense, this energy lock can help us to truly distinguish, to discriminate, to open the path to deep understanding, and to keep our balance physically, mentally, and emotionally. It helps us to live our life with sincerity and can alleviate dizziness. For self-help, put your right hand on the left No. 6 and your left hand on the left No. 15 – that is, on your hip bone, fingers pointing toward the groin.
Energy lock No. 7
Lock No. 7 is located at the center of the fleshy part of the big toes.

Energy circulates up the back side of the body and down the front, and No. 7 is located at the lowest point of that cycle. It represents the pause between exhaling and inhaling, between descending and ascending energy. We are getting to the bottom of things in a literal and metaphoric sense. This lock helps us to draw the energy all the way down and thus aids with relieving head discomforts, chest congestion, nausea, and dizziness.

These are the best points to hold for grounding and for people who quickly lose control. It dissipates too much mental activity, clears the mind, helps with learning difficulties, and is a great lock to hold on somebody throwing a tantrum – that is, if you can manage to get hold of their big toes! Use them as first aid in shock situations, for asthma attacks, or belly cramps. As self-help, simply hold both big toes with your arms parallel and then crossed.

Energy lock No. 8
This energy lock is located on the outside of the knees.

It is related to finding power in our own rhythm and thus abiding in deep peacefulness. Deepak Chopra said, “Our biological rhythms are the symphony of the cosmos, music embedded deep within us to which we dance, even when we can’t name the tune.” And Michael Jackson said, “To live is to be musical, starting with your blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rhythm. Do you feel your music?”

Consequently, this energy lock is helpful for bringing us back to our own tune and stilling the mind. Life is never-ending change, and if we are open and in tune with that, we are able to find peace. In Qi Gong practice, this area needs to be open so that one can feel grounded and the energy can flow freely through the pelvis.

No. 8 helps with anything problematic in the pelvic area, including reproductive organs, assimilation, and elimination. It helps to release muscle tension and can be applied for any skin problem. Simply hold both No. 8s at the same time. Hold just the left No.8 for constipation and just the right No. 8 for diarrhea.
Energy lock No. 9
Tarot card 6 of swords: letting go of what we are familiar with and not yet knowing what the future will bring.
A torii is a traditional Japanese gate, commonly found at the entrance of Shinto shrines. As a symbol it stands for the transition from the profane to the sacred
This lock is located at the lower tip of the shoulder blades, close to the spine. The theme of this lock is the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. Every ending contains the seed of a new beginning.

Harmonizing lock No. 9 helps us to let go more gracefully of everything that is no longer part of our present life, such as a relationship, a loved one who has passed away, a work place, a house, our youthfulness, a conflict, an old trauma, or a habit. It helps us to stop carrying around those outdated issues and to eliminate any remnants so that there is space available for new things to enter our life. It helps us with post-traumatic stress, all passages in life, and difficult times. We can see more clearly what this transition is about and make better choices. It connects us with ageless wisdom and prevents excessive thinking and analyzing.
Energy lock No.10
Energy lock No.10 is located close to the medial border of the shoulder blade, just above Nr.9
Primordial limitless source energy is flowing through me into the world. This lock reconnects us to the source of all aliveness, opens our chest and hearts and lets us get in touch again with all those feelings that got locked away. It reminds us that we are part of a continuing ancestor lineage and that those who lived before us are standing now behind us, wanting us to live our life to the fullest. This lock helps us to relax back into the supporting embrace of source energy and know that we always can rely on it. We are not alone.
It is an energy lock of its own category and on the physical level helps us with all heart related issues, blood circulation, lungs, voice and lack of energy in general.
Energy lock No.11
Lock No.11 is located where the shoulder meets the neck.
This lock is all about letting go of any baggage that we are schlepping around on our shoulders: all the issues and responsibilities that we have taken on that are not ours to take care of; all the "if I only had ...", " I should ....", " I have to ...". We learn what our responsibility is and what not. It helps us to free ourselves from the obsession to be always right, from knowing everything better and from the constant need to compare ourselves with others.

This lock is special in that its vibration and wellbeing has an influence on all the other locks! When we let go of all those burdens we feel lighter, can take deeper breaths and can let go of sadness, doubt and negative thinking. By harmonizing this energy lock we release the entire shoulder girdle so that the energy can flow again freely through our hands, arms, neck and head.
Energy lock No.12
Lock No.12 is located at the back of the neck, halfway between the skull and the shoulders.
This life principle represents the paradox of the outer world being the reflexion of our inner state of being. A tense No.12 brings stress and anxiety. Suddenly everybody "out there" behaves very strange and scares us and we find a lot of things that are not acceptable to us. On the other hand this lock is related to our attitude toward ourselves. Do I love or hate myself? Do I properly nourish myself or ignore my needs and desires?

By harmonizing energy lock No.12 we become more open and willing to deeply listen to the universe and experience our primordial connection to everything there is. An open No.12 helps us as well to be in better contact with our Higher Self and let it guide us instead of relying on our rational mind or making fear-based decisions. We can't stop the waves (of life) but we can learn to surf.
For self-help, hold with your right hand the left No.12 and put your left hand at the very tip of your tailbone. Switch hands for the other side: left hand on right No.12, right hand on tailbone.
Energy lock No.13
Energy lock No.13 is located  about 3 finger widths above the nipples.
This energy lock represents the beauty and unlimited power of creation, fertility and innocence. By holding this energy lock we connect with that creative power through our heart, allow our chest to open and feel joyful and enthusiastic about life. It helps us to let go of our accumulated beliefs and assumptions about how things are and perceive every moment with an innocent mind. It nourishes our inner child and rejuvenates us. This is the perfect lock to hold for women during pregnancy and a few months after childbirth. It is very helpful for all serious illnesses and for people who are on heavy medication. It supports the immune system and it balances hormones and food addictions. Hold as well for all heart related projects - physical and emotional.
For self help application simply put your right hand on left No.13 and your left hand on right No.13.
Descriptions for energy locks No.14 - 26 will follow soon :-)
